This film include genres of coming of age , fantasy comedy and drama.This movie may appeal to young females as Zac Efron is this protagonist of the movie and is seen as an 'attractive' teen, as well as High School Musical fans may be interested in this movie . Zac Efron also had a small role in hairspray ,this may also attract older people to watch the movie as he played a strong role of the film based in the 60's.

Director Singleton tries to educate his audience through the statement at the start of the movie.This is primarily aimed aimed at African Americans ,paying attention to the violence against black people. This film may also be aimed at males more than females ,to teach them morals and values of life and how to stay focused within society. This film also goes through parent hood relationships ,especially male parent hood as father guidance. Some characters have been raised the right way ,whereas 'Doughboy' is obedient and lacks a relationship with his parents. This relates to some of the teenage struggles now a days.
