Props and costumes for our remake of the Breakfast Club opening.

For our remake of The Breakfast club opening we had to bring costumes and props for our characters and the setting. One of the props we brought were toy cars. The reason for this is because in the opening every teenager was in a car and because we don't drive cars or own one we obviously had to bring them in. We put the cars in front of the camera to make it look like we are actually in one.

We brought costumes in to represent our character and we had a jock, for a jock we brought a baseball jacket and a casual t-shirt to wear. For the princess we had a nice red jumper similar to the girl in the opening, although red is not what typically a 'princess' would wear, as it was a remake of the movie we tried to keep it similar as possible. For the character we call the 'brain' we kept it nice and simple with a t-shirt which isn't anything extreme. For the character that walks out of the car trying to say goodbye but without managing to, the car drives away, we had a black jacket, a scarf, to try to make her look like the girl in the opening and that's about it.

Note: The pictures are not the props we used but they are just an idea of how they look.

Title Sequences- Order of titles

First of all, what IS a title sequence?

A title sequence is the method by which films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sounds. It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits as they are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed texts.

An example of a title sequence:

In the title sequence the first thing you see before anything else, are the logos of the production companies and distribution companies. The reason for this is because the companies provide money for the movies to be shot and put forward through to the media and would therefore have their logos of their companies to be the first thing the audience would see whilst watching the movie. An advantage of this is that the audience would familiarise themselves with the idents of the company which means they would become more famous. Therefore another advantage is that if the movie becomes famous then it is likely for the production companies to become more known to the population and to successful business companies which will bring in money.

After seeing the production and distribution companies being presented to the audience, a list of names come up for e.g. telling us who the director of the movie is, characters name, movie name etc. Furthermore, what happens sometimes in the title sequence is that you have the name of a person and that happens sometimes because the person is hugely important in the movie perhaps the main character. This happens usually before signing a contract as they would want their name before anything else or they won't participate. An example of this is in the movie 'Heathers' the name Winona Ryder comes up before any other and this is called a auteur. 

One thing I learnt is that production and distribution companies would show their idents first, if they pay for the movie why wouldn't they? They try to become known in the media industry and in other types of businesses in case the movie does get a hit.

Analysis of a teen movie is SO UNDERCOVER:

When the FBI hires her to go undercover at a college sorority, Molly Morris (Miley Cyrus) must transform herself from a tough, streetwise private investigator to a refined, sophisticated university girl to help protect the daughter of a one-time Mobster. With several suspects on her list, Molly unexpectedly discovers that not everyone is who they appear to be, including herself.

This is a teen movie however, it is isn't a typical one. You don't have the FBI hiring a teenager to solve a case for them they don't particularly know. It's something engaging to watch as it is not stereotypical of a teenager to solve a case but usually older people.

One of the binary oppositions for this movie is stylish vs non stylish. What I mean is that Molly isn't a great fan of fashion and style, she is not someone you would expect to be an expert to know what top matches with what shoe, not someone that knows how to put heavy make-up on. She gets help from the professional make up artists for the undercover case and doesn't do this herself as she doesn't know how to. In contrast to Molly, the girls she has to stay in a home with as her undercover case know exactly all this which clearly shows the differences. The girls are stylish, have the knowledge on how to look pretty on the outside with clothing, make-up etc. These girls are very girly and very typical in a teen movie where as Molly isn't girly and not the type of girl you would expect to see in one. She's not portrayed as a princess, girly,a slut etc but just a normal girl. Another binary opposition is typical vs non typical teenagers. Molly Morris is a non typical teenager, she has the knowledge and a maturity level/mindset of an adult in their mid 30s. She is highly responsible of herself, solves cases and doesn't party. However, these other girls are what you would expect from a teenager. They party a lot, drink alcoholic beverages, seem like education isn't their top priority, do whatever they feel like doing instead of being responsible and mature. Another binary opposition is adults vs  teenagers. Molly portrays herself more like an adult as mentioned earlier because she is aware of everything she's doing and knows if it's the right decision or not whereas, the girls she lives with in her undercover case are pure teenagers that live their life at that stage and don't seem like they expand on having the mindset of an older person.

This movie is different to the Bling Ring. The group of teenagers go and rob celebs houses whereas, Molly in So undercover goes to someone's house to seek justice. The Bling Ring are committing illegal acts wheras Molly is serving justice. Molly is a teenager that does not do drugs, smoke or anything that could physically harm her whereas, teenagers in the Bling Ring do exactly that. The Bling Ring clique have a passion for style and fashion where as Molly is a type who would wear casual clothing like jeans and a hoodie and not designer clothes with shoes etc like the Bling Ring Crew. Molly is mature and responsible and is aware of the rights and wrongs whereas, the Bling Ring clique don't seem to understand what is rights and wrongs by doing too many things that are forbidden. The Bling Ring clique do not adhere to the rules whereas, Molly does. However, Molly and the Bling Ring clique do have something in common, they are teenagers, teenagers that do what they love although it means robbing people, it makes them feel better about themselves. Also, if it means for Molly to pretend to be a University student to solve a case then it's completely fine as long as she solves a case, she likes this profession.

The Bling Ring Movie Write Up

The burglars in the movie are teenagers, teenagers that desire the need to feel special and  certain importance in them by stealing loads of celebrity goods. They want to possess many expensive things they know that they can never have, live the life that stands a chance of one to a million for them and even steal money from the famous people in Hollywood. I think that what they have in common for many teen movies is that they have their own role models they admire and that they look up to, want to live the life that celebs live. A lot of teenagers feel the same so to some extent we can relate to how they feel. However, what differs them from many other teenagers is that we do not go and rob celebs and therefore this is something very unusual  but on the other hand, enjoyable to watch because we know that we can never do something like that.

The montage title sequence is very conventional as it informs us by hinting to us what is going to happen as it conveys a lot of information in a relatively short period using small shots of the movie. Due to the montage title sequence we know that these teenagers deal, party a lot, steal money, wear things that do not belong to them, leave evidence behind etc. For example, in the montage title sequence investigators come in Paris Hilton's home and take pictures of the scene where the teenagers steal things. You have many items being thrown in the plastic wallets and huge print saying EVIDENCE which means they're in the middle of an investigation in finding out who is responsible for this. Another example of the investigation in the montage title sequence is as they are on CCTV footage and on TV as well which the reporters reffering them as 'The Bling Ring'. It foreshadows a lot as it has a clip of people filming Niki (Emma Watson) where she says that she is a firm believer in karma and definitely has learnt something from this lesson. This is shown in the title sequence and at the end too. In the beginning we do not quite understand this but do have some idea on what's going to happen due to all the hints, it foreshadows a lot and then appears in the end again which makes sense in the end and clear.

As it is based on teenagers, the beginning of the film is very typical as its location for the movie is in a high school which shows they are educated youths. Another typical feature that happens at the start of the movie is as an outsider comes into a new school and becomes friends with people that causes the outsider nothing but pure trouble and a movie example of this typical feature is Mean Girls. Another typical feature of this teen movie is as the group of teenagers are a clique and this is something that are found in most teen movies because it is something that is understandable to the viewers and something you can relate to.

Binary oppositions in Bling ring is rich vs poor and this is as the teenagers are only people that go to school, they don't have money to posess million of dollars home or famous expensive designer clothes, shoes etc that rich people do. They are just normal students however, they don't want to accept the fact that they're just normal students as they want to live the life of the rich. For example, as they steal designer clothes, money, party like celebs and go to school like they're as important to the society as the Hollywood celebs are like Paris Hilton. Paris Hilton and other Hollywood celebs can afford anything they want however, these teenagers can't, therefore rich vs poor. Another binary opposition is authority vs no authority. In any teen movies you have the authorities telling you what to do and what not e.g. you have your parents and in this teen movie they have their parents doing this. However, it's not just them but the police as they land in jail, they get taken away in court and then in jail and they have the authority whereas, these teenagers don't.

The teenagers in the clique portray their passion for fashion and style as they look at some magazines of celebrities wearing nice chanel items on them, prada items etc. They have a lot of knowledge when it comes to fashion clothes etc as they They admire them for their sense of style which is is ironic because they rob it afterwards.

Reflection Post about my BLOG

So far in media studies I personally think that I am up to date with all of my work that we have been asked to do. I try to make my points very clear with what I am talking about and I think that I've contributed and worked very hard into thinking further about teen movies and how we could possibly make our own one a hit. Me and my group made sure that we learn a lot through the lessons to secure ourselves a very good, entertaining teen movie. What I think I am doing well is using images and videos to illustrate my point and idea to my audience. For example, if I talk about a specific movie I get a picture of their posters they market on the web and post it and use visuals to basically bring my point across to the audience e.g. they use a lot of pink to illustrate the idea of a princess etc. However, I realised that I tend to be brief sometimes about a point I'm trying to make and I think that should change and it will in the future. Something else I could improve on is to use a lot more media terminology as I didn't use many so far which I would try my very best to keep up with as this needs to change. Furthermore, although I think I am up to date with everything I don't think that my voice has been heard entirely. I don't think my voice came through to my audience very much and therefore want to change that. I want to give my work a lot of detail and to analyse what I'm writing about and use giffs to make it more 'alive', engaging and interesting to read and look at and hopefully through all the improvements I need to make, my voice would he heard.

Storylines, Openings+ Binary Oppositions

Princess Diaries use various ways to establish the binary oppositions in the opening scene. They introduce the characters which means we could straight away establish the relationship between the main character and another character just by seeing how they get along with each other. Through the opening one of the main binary oppositions we have are mainly popularity vs non popularity. The main character Mia is so to say 'invisible' to her school mates and classified as unpopular and not very appealing in the way she looks however, we have the popular group of girls that are the opposite which are very pretty and girls who immediately get attention if they're in your presence. Here it is obvious that another binary opposition we have is 'beautiful girls vs ugly girls'. Another thing you would notice in a high school is that typically the popular and non popular girls don't get along with each other and this is exactly what occurs in the movie which establishes conflict between the two separate category of girls. Without binary oppositions it wouldn't bring the movie forward with interest and engagement as it shows us what the main differences are. Usually when popular girls get attention from the crowd, they are extremely confident in their surroundings as they're used to being noticed however, the unpopular girls would be fearing more with how people will mock them if they're openly exposed in a situation for e.g. stand in front of a classroom and speak as they consider themselves as not important to the society. This therefore establishes the binary oppositions with confidence vs nervous. Lastly, the last binary opposition I found in Princess Diaries is 'royalty vs non royal'. The grandma of the main character is the Queen which we could therefore see the difference between popular girls in a high school and a queen that is responsible for the whole country they live in themselves.

In '10 things I hate about you' is another typical teen movie where the mis en scene is usually based in a high school. 

GENRE AND CONVENTION

Teen films is a film genre targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of teenagers, such as coming of age, first love, rebellion, conflict with parents, teen angst or alienation. Often these normally serious subject matters are presented in a glossy, stereotyped or trivialized way. Some teen films appeal to young males while others appeal to young females.

The most common sub-genres in teen films are:

• romance
• comedy
• thriller
• horror
• tragedy
• drama
• psychological
• geeky
• fantasy

etc.

Most teen films are set in educational places such as high schools and Universities. By doing this it relates to teenagers because they set it someplace they know very well. In quirky films you have the usual Hot/popular person and then the geek who then becomes the hero in the end. In romanatic comedies it is always the guy who goes for the girl of his dreams and that mostly happens when they're at school. Basically, they have very generic plots that are easy to guess the outcome of.

Teen movies, task 2.

One teen movie I picked out is mean girls. Mean girls are targeted mainly towards females. The whole movie is based on female problems and lives which us teenagers relate to. It is based in a high school setting where we could compare our lives with theirs. You have boyfriend drama, mean popular girls and the new girl that doesn't make many friends but in the end reaches to a stage where they become popular in their generation. This all occurs in our high school life which makes it more enjoyable and meaningful to understand and watch. This wouldn't really attract males because there isn't much in the movie to attract males attention into watching it other than having the popular steal someone's boyfriend etc. The main character is Lindsey Lohan and she is a popular actress which has a lot of female admirers which means it attracts more fans to watch it.

One teen movie I picked out is '17 again' with the famous actor Zac Efron. For this movie I believe that the target audience is a mix match of males and females. This is because it involves both lives of each gender which attract a lot more people to watch it  However, as Zac Efron is the main character females would be attracted into watching him more which wins a lot of fans. This is a comedy film and it is a high school based movie which teenagers can relate to and enjoy more watching it.

Another teen movie is Twilight and it is a series of romance fantasy films which is targeted mainly towards females. Although you have main characters that is a male, it doesn't really appeal to males in general to watch as it has got to do with romance and typically they would watch action, comedy etc. Here we have the main character as Robert Pattison which appeared in a Harry Potter movie, the Goblet of Fire which made a huge success across the whole globe which means this therefore would attract a lot more people into watching Twilight.

We did some audience research into teen movies, we asked 

• What are their favourite teen movies?
• what is appealing about these films?
• Who is your characters?
• What is you favourite teen film genre?

We then came across someone who wasn't really into teen films.

What is a teen movie?

A teen film is a film genre targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of them.

                                                          Who watches teen movies?

The majority of the people that watch teen movies are teenagers and early 20 year olds. They have certain elements in which they may be interested in watching for e.g. high schools, being in conflict with an authority figure etc. However, the teens are not the only people that watch it. We have older people who watch teen movies for nostalgic reasons for example 30,40 year olds.

Why do we like teen movies?

Usually because the target audience can relate to the environment as they experience it on a day to day basis. For e.g. high school, the subject manner, the characters etc.

What Happens at The Start Of a Film?

TITLE SEQUENCE

Usually when you have the title sequence before the movie you have the production company and distributors logos so we know who has funded the movie and then e get into who was involved in making it for example; actors, producers, director, camera person etc. Sometimes we see what the actors do in the movie so we have an idea of what kind of character they are.

You also get in the title sequence little previews of what is in the movie before you see it but this only happens in some movies not all. There is also music during the title sequence which is like a mood setter for the beginning of the movie such as if it was a scary movie you would have slow or fast past music, usually instrumental not with lyrics. Also you some times get voice overs and writing on the screen so we can follow what he/she is saying.

We chose to analyse Scott Pilgrim vs the world's title sequence. In the title sequence we see  the Universal logo. While the Universal logo is shown we hear the Universal theme song which is played in a video game kind of sound which makes us think what is in the movie is joint to the idea of video games. 

We then get a voice over, mans voice, and tells us a little bit of the movie such as where it is set and the name of one of the characters in the movie. The voice over seems to be a narrator sort of person and not someone we would see in the movie. He has a deep voice and talks at a slow pace which makes us think that it's like the beginning

of an adventure and he's giving us the back up story. Another link we made was that the Charlie and The Chocolate factory (recent one) also has a deep voice narrator. 

In the clip we see the characters of the movie and with that we get a side box which tell us their names and their age as well as other small bits of information. They also include edits such as writing with sounds like ring of the door bell and the banging of the drumsticks. 

Near the end of the clip we then see them start playing in their band a very up beat song. While this happens we see the title of the movie and then we get into the different people who were involved in the making of the film. In the background we have sort of scribbles and block colours which you could say contributes to the sound of the music being played.
