Ideas of song choices ,camera shots ,costumes and props for our teen movie

Ideas for camera shots, song choices , costumes and props in our teen movie

I have selected some songs which I think will be appropriate ,catchy and successful for our teen movie.
I have also selected these songs as they are common types of music to be heard in teen movies. I have also selected some shots which have caught my attention in several movies which I believe we could similarly interpret some in our teen movie .

' Last Friday Night ' by Katy Perry
This music video shows a wild house party showing the stereotypical nerd from college who wakes up into this house party and the stereotypical popular , handsome footballer at the party. I believe this would work well as the characters we use in our teen movie can relate to the song and party atmosphere as soon in the music video.

Chris Brown ft Kid Ink - Show Me

I believe this song would work well to create a party atmosphere , for example in a scene which may be the schools prom or this could also be used when the ' popular' character from school is shown walking down the corridor

Shots

I believe this is a very good shot which can be used to show the superiority from teachers compared to the students in class to show the binary opposition clear.

Ideas for a storyboard

So I was doodling and trying to come up with a storyboard the other day to an extract from something I found on the internet, and I thought it could make quite a nice storyboard for the beginning of a teen movie, or of something in a similiar style:

Holiday task - Scott Pilgrim

I think that Scott Pilgrim is one of the significantly less standard teen movies, although I still think it slots into this category (although maybe late teens as a pose to 15). I chose it because I prefer arty films, and it was the 'artiest' within the genre I could find. It combines multiple genres, like comedy, action, teen and some romance, and I think one of its main selling points is its uncomfortable and dry humour.

One of the other major differences it has is with the comic style editing. I think this may be the one thing that separates Scott Pilgrim from numerous other films, and this quirky style makes it watchable to the quieter teenage demographic, the nerds, who often get overlooked in the making of films.

HOLIDAY TASK

Beastly

Beastly is a teenage movie about two people fall in love under weird circumstances. It is a typical high school, teenage movie with conventional terms in location, type of characters, sound played, the storyline and the binary oppositions.

At the begining of the film you first see the companies that helped make the film and then then you see the name of the film. Once the films started you get introduced to the main character which is a conventional way to start a teen movie. It then goes into a series of shots of New York City which gives us a feel of the atnmosphere of the movie which is that is based in a city. When the film starts you go to the first scene in hishgschool which helps give us the idea that this is a teen movie.

The filmed followed the conventional themes for a teen movie. In location you had minimal settings such as school, a house and a party. This was enough to tell us this was a teen film. You also had the stereotypical characters that you see in teen movies. You had; The rich handsome boy, the beautiful people, ugly people and weird people.

The storyline is typical of a teen movie because its about two young people that fall in love but not in the typical way because he isn't who she thinks he is until the end of the movie. It also involves magic which you can relate to what some teenagers do just to experiment with different things. the music they play is also very modern which relates to teen movies because its what teenagers listen to.

There are also binary oppositions in the movie such as;

Beauty and the Beast

Popular vs Un-popular

3 Stereotypical Characters

I'm going to base my stereotypical characters from the movie 'Not another teen Movie'. I think this movie has varied stereotypical groups that are seen through out the movie. One of the first ones we meet is 'Princess'.

Princesses are usually girls who get everything they want by asking for it. They come from a rich family and her father owns a company or something of the sort. They love the colour pink, love brands, and always drive convertibles. Even though they get everything they want they always want more. They're mean to anyone who is down to earth or are known as 'nerds' and 'geeks' in high school. She is popular and doesn't like it any other way. They dress is very girly things and usually tight. She also wears high heels and very furry things.

We then meet her boyfriend who is the popular kid who is a Jock.

The Jock is usually the captain of a fdootball team or is really good at a certain sport. Because high school being so into cliques, The Jock and The Princess always get together to keep the harmony. Jocks are usually aware of how handsome they are and use it to their advantage. They are bullies o those who are not classed as 'cool'. They are self absorbant and don't really care about anyone apart from themselves.

Then you have one of the people that want to break up the 'Love' couple who is called the Slut.

She doesn't want to get with the jock just because she likes him, she wants to get the attention from other men. The sluts are usually very experienced in the sexual area and every male boy would know her in school for obvious reasons. The princess doesn'yt like the slut because she does get a lot attention from guys and the princess likes being centre of attention. The Slut usually dresses in very revealing clothing and short/tight things to seem more revealing. If they see that they're not going to get what they want they usually stop trying.

HOLIDAY TASK

Analysis of a teen movie is SO UNDERCOVER:

Trailer ^

When the FBI hires her to go undercover at a college sorority, Molly Morris (Miley Cyrus) must transform herself from a tough, streetwise private investigator to a refined, sophisticated university girl to help protect the daughter of a one-time Mobster. With several suspects on her list, Molly unexpectedly discovers that not everyone is who they appear to be, including herself.

This is a teen movie however, it is isn't a typical one. You don't have the FBI hiring a teenager to solve a case for them they don't particularly know. It's something engaging to watch as it is not stereotypical of a teenager to solve a case but usually older people.

One of the binary oppositions for this movie is stylish vs non stylish. What I mean is that Molly isn't a great fan of fashion and style, she is not someone you would expect to be an expert to know what top matches with what shoe, not someone that knows how to put heavy make-up on. She gets help from the professional make up artists for the undercover case and doesn't do this herself as she doesn't know how to. In contrast to Molly, the girls she has to stay in a home with as her undercover case know exactly all this which clearly shows the differences. The girls are stylish, have the knowledge on how to look pretty on the outside with clothing, make-up etc. These girls are very girly and very typical in a teen movie where as Molly isn't girly and not the type of girl you would expect to see in one. She's not portrayed as a princess, girly,a slut etc but just a normal girl. Another binary opposition is typical vs non typical teenagers. Molly Morris is a non typical teenager, she has the knowledge and a maturity level/mindset of an adult in their mid 30s. She is highly responsible of herself, solves cases and doesn't party. However, these other girls are what you would expect from a teenager. They party a lot, drink alcoholic beverages, seem like education isn't their top priority, do whatever they feel like doing instead of being responsible and mature. Another binary opposition is adults vs  teenagers. Molly portrays herself more like an adult as mentioned earlier because she is aware of everything she's doing and knows if it's the right decision or not whereas, the girls she lives with in her undercover case are pure teenagers that live their life at that stage and don't seem like they expand on having the mindset of an older person.

This movie is different to the Bling Ring. The group of teenagers go and rob celebs houses whereas, Molly in So undercover goes to someone's house to seek justice. The Bling Ring are committing illegal acts wheras Molly is serving justice. Molly is a teenager that does not do drugs, smoke or anything that could physically harm her whereas, teenagers in the Bling Ring do exactly that. The Bling Ring clique have a passion for style and fashion where as Molly is a type who would wear casual clothing like jeans and a hoodie and not designer clothes with shoes etc like the Bling Ring Crew. Molly is mature and responsible and is aware of the rights and wrongs whereas, the Bling Ring clique don't seem to understand what is rights and wrongs by doing too many things that are forbidden. The Bling Ring clique do not adhere to the rules whereas, Molly does. However, Molly and the Bling Ring clique do have something in common, they are teenagers, teenagers that do what they love although it means robbing people, it makes them feel better about themselves. Also, if it means for Molly to pretend to be a University student to solve a case then it's completely fine as long as she solves a case, she likes this profession.

Interview about this movie:

The Bling Ring Write Up

The Bling Ring Movie Write Up

The burglars in the movie are teenagers, teenagers that desire the need to feel special and  certain importance in them by stealing loads of celebrity goods. They want to possess many expensive things they know that they can never have, live the life that stands a chance of one to a million for them and even steal money from the famous people in Hollywood. I think that what they have in common for many teen movies is that they have their own role models they admire and that they look up to, want to live the life that celebs live. A lot of teenagers feel the same so to some extent we can relate to how they feel. However, what differs them from many other teenagers is that we do not go and rob celebs and therefore this is something very unusual  but on the other hand, enjoyable to watch because we know that we can never do something like that.

The montage title sequence is very conventional as it informs us by hinting to us what is going to happen as it conveys a lot of information in a relatively short period using small shots of the movie. Due to the montage title sequence we know that these teenagers deal, party a lot, steal money, wear things that do not belong to them, leave evidence behind etc. For example, in the montage title sequence investigators come in Paris Hilton's home and take pictures of the scene where the teenagers steal things. You have many items being thrown in the plastic wallets and huge print saying EVIDENCE which means they're in the middle of an investigation in finding out who is responsible for this. Another example of the investigation in the montage title sequence is as they are on CCTV footage and on TV as well which the reporters reffering them as 'The Bling Ring'. It foreshadows a lot as it has a clip of people filming Niki (Emma Watson) where she says that she is a firm believer in karma and definitely has learnt something from this lesson. This is shown in the title sequence and at the end too. In the beginning we do not quite understand this but do have some idea on what's going to happen due to all the hints, it foreshadows a lot and then appears in the end again which makes sense in the end and clear.

As it is based on teenagers, the beginning of the film is very typical as its location for the movie is in a high school which shows they are educated youths. Another typical feature that happens at the start of the movie is as an outsider comes into a new school and becomes friends with people that causes the outsider nothing but pure trouble and a movie example of this typical feature is Mean Girls. Another typical feature of this teen movie is as the group of teenagers are a clique and this is something that are found in most teen movies because it is something that is understandable to the viewers and something you can relate to.

Binary oppositions in Bling ring is rich vs poor and this is as the teenagers are only people that go to school, they don't have money to posess million of dollars home or famous expensive designer clothes, shoes etc that rich people do. They are just normal students however, they don't want to accept the fact that they're just normal students as they want to live the life of the rich. For example, as they steal designer clothes, money, party like celebs and go to school like they're as important to the society as the Hollywood celebs are like Paris Hilton. Paris Hilton and other Hollywood celebs can afford anything they want however, these teenagers can't, therefore rich vs poor. Another binary opposition is authority vs no authority. In any teen movies you have the authorities telling you what to do and what not e.g. you have your parents and in this teen movie they have their parents doing this. However, it's not just them but the police as they land in jail, they get taken away in court and then in jail and they have the authority whereas, these teenagers don't.

The teenagers in the clique portray their passion for fashion and style as they look at some magazines of celebrities wearing nice chanel items on them, prada items etc. They have a lot of knowledge when it comes to fashion clothes etc as they They admire them for their sense of style which is is ironic because they rob it afterwards.

This is based on a true story where people would rob celebs house and one of the victims were Paris Hilton.  This video is a report on this case:

The Bling Ring

The  Bling Ring

The film opening was convectional as their are flash forwards at the start of the end of the movie and the teenagers stealing goods from a celebrities house. In addition ,the montage title sequence foreshadows what happens in the movie ,for example the shots of high heels , Facebook ,Pariz Hilton and jewelery gives the audience an idea of the movie being a burglary by young people linked to celebrities. This shown through mise en scene ; plastic bags with objects and a note pad with 'Evidence'.

This movie focuses on fame ,money and drugs , we see a shot at the start
where Lindsay Lohan is arrested from drugs , which leads to the teenagers in the movie doing the same things as they are so focused on what celebrities are doing . Most teenagers are also obsessed and  want an inside look into the real life of these celebrities.

The Bling Ring is  based on  true events of  burglaries at Paris Hilton; Lindsay Lohan; Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr; Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox; Rachel Bilson; and Audrina Patridge homes.

Here is a short interview with  Paris Hilton sharing her opinion of the movie and her thought of the burglary :

The title of the movie and title sequences is  bright yellow in a dom diagonal font ,giving a stylish , modern ,friendly and casual look.
Throughout the movie heavy, loud, pop and hip hop/rap  music is played which stereotypes  their bad behavior and popularity. In the opening of 'The Bling Ring' Crown on the ground by Sleigh Bells is played.

The film followed conventions in terms of location ,characters ,story line and binary oppositions.
The location shown in the opening of 'The Bling Ring ' are a kitchen, bedroom and a school ,these are typical settings for teenagers to be at the start of a movie .We can also stereotype the characters in the movie by how they look for example the celebrities are wealthy ,beautiful people with perfect hair and body shape ,where as the teenagers are seen as ordinary teenagers ,however they want the glamours life.

 Rich VS Poor

The teenagers are shown wearing sober coloured clothes ; jeans, jackets and hoodies .Whereas the 'millionaire' Paris Hilton is wearing top designers and diamonds.

Teen VS Authority

The teenagers are always in authority by the police ,parents and teachers.

Reflection Post about my BLOG

So far in media studies I personally think that I am up to date with all of my work that we have been asked to do. I try to make my points very clear with what I am talking about and I think that I've contributed and worked very hard into thinking further about teen movies and how we could possibly make our own one a hit. Me and my group made sure that we learn a lot through the lessons to secure ourselves a very good, entertaining teen movie. What I think I am doing well is using images and videos to illustrate my point and idea to my audience. For example, if I talk about a specific movie I get a picture of their posters they market on the web and post it and use visuals to basically bring my point across to the audience e.g. they use a lot of pink to illustrate the idea of a princess etc. However, I realised that I tend to be brief sometimes about a point I'm trying to make and I think that should change and it will in the future. Something else I could improve on is to use a lot more media terminology as I didn't use many so far which I would try my very best to keep up with as this needs to change. Furthermore, although I think I am up to date with everything I don't think that my voice has been heard entirely. I don't think my voice came through to my audience very much and therefore want to change that. I want to give my work a lot of detail and to analyse what I'm writing about and use giffs to make it more 'alive', engaging and interesting to read and look at and hopefully through all the improvements I need to make, my voice would he heard.

Conventions - The Bling Ring

In class today we watched a the film The Bling Ring, which is a biographic teen movie based on a crime spree which a group of teens committed in LA, on Lindsay Lohan,Paris Hilton,Orlando Bloom and others. The films opening went against the conventions of a teen film, this is because at the beginning of The Bling Ring, the viewer is shown a clip from later on in the film, which then changes to a montage of the clip, pictures of shoes and videos of celebrities.I think this made it particularly more interesting because the viewer immediately becomes hooked.
The Movie focuses on three things which are involved in a lot of teen films, money, drugs and fame. The teens in the film are driven by keeping up with the latest fashion which is shown by the celebrities. The characters were even influenced to take drugs as some celebrities have been arrested for like Lindsay Lohan, there is a shot of her being arrested in the montage. There are not a lot of the popular teen film stereotypes used in this film, this may be because it is a biography, however characters like Rebecca could be described as similar to the popular girl in school which all the other girls want to be friends with;the character Marc could be perceived to be the one with no who always seeks acceptance.

THE BLING RING

The Bling Ring had a conventional sort of opening apart from some non conventional things that you would see in teen films. For the title sequence we had a photomontage of different things like; Facebook, the news, shots of shoes, jewellery, the key characters etc. From this we can already tell what kind of movie we will see. You also get the idea thatthis is a teenage film because of thw setting, which is in a high school, and the kind of music that they play, which is modern and what teenagers listen to.

The film followed the conventional terms of a teenage film by the location, tyoe of characters, sound area of the film, story line and the binary opposition that you usually see in a teenage movie. The location was in a school like i said before and so we immediately that this is about something to do with school and the teenagers inside.

The characters of a teen film are usually popular, beautifuly people and then you have different stereotypical groups. In this film you do have the beautiful, rich people but there isn't a very high school kind of movie but more about teenagers that do ilegal things. The music goes with the idea of a teenage movie because you hear a lot of modern music that teenagers listen to.

The story fits in with the idea of a teen movie because the story line to Bling Ring is teens that do drugs, parties and going to clubs. These teenagers do what normal teenagers do and a little bit more because of all the drugs they do as well as steal.

There arE teenage binary oppositions that you can associate with different teen movies that you see in The Bling Ring.

TEEN VS AUTHORITY

RICH VS POOR
